YouTube TV has made some major changes to its service with the addition of NFL Network to its base package, as well as the option to add a Sports Plus add-on, for those in need of an even greater sports fix.
YouTube TV is one of the more popular live TV streaming services in the U.S. and while it has encountered a significant price increase recently, the service has continuously been adding new channels. This approach of upping the price while adding more channels allows YouTube TV to maintain its overall value, even if the price alienates some subscribers in the process. Today’s announcement appears to continue with that same approach.
YouTube TV and NFL Network both individually confirmed a carriage deal had been reached to bring NFL Network into the YouTube TV fold. For existing subscribers, NFL Network is being added as part of the base package and this time, with no mention of an additional cost. The timing of the announcement is also not a coincidence, considering football season is due to kickoff in a matter of days. As the NFL announcement explains:
“YouTube TV’s addition of NFL Network includes live exclusive games, live studio shows such as Good Morning Football, NFL GameDay Morning, NFL Now and NFL Total Access, and original content series such as A Football Life, NFL 360 and America’s Game.”
NFL Network
Besides the inclusion of NFL Network, both announcements also confirmed that NFL RedZone can now be accessed through YouTube TV’s new Sports Plus add-on.
How the Sports Plus add-on works
Although announced along with the addition of NFL Network, the Sports Plus add-on is completely separate. While NFL Network is included in the current YouTube TV subscription, Sports Plus must be added to the package, at an additional monthly cost.
Essentially, Sports Plus costs an additional $10.99 per month on top of the current subscription price. For that additional monthly fee, subscribers gain access to seven sports networks, including, NFL RedZone.
Sports networks including with Sports Plus:
- Fox College Sports
- Fox Soccer Plus
- GolTV
- MAVTV
- NFL RedZone
- TVG
- Stadium
While an additional cost to the subscriber, the value on offer here sticks with YouTube TV’s general approach, as subscribing to each of these services is likely to cost significantly more than what YouTube TV is now asking.
Although, for those not that interested in live and on-demand sports, today’s YouTube TV and NFL news might not matter so much.
