Warner Bros. Discovery ended the second quarter of 2024 with 103.3 million global direct-to-consumer subscribers. The subscriber update confirms an increase on the previous quarter of around 3.6 million subscribers.

Warner Bros. Discovery, who no longer provides subscriber numbers for individual services including Discovery+ and Max, ended the first quarter with 99.6 million subscribers, an increase of roughly 2 million on the final three months of 2023.

When taking into account the 3.6 million subscribers added during Q2 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery added 5.6 million subscribers in the first half of this year. On a year-over-year basis, Warner Bros. Discovery added 6.7 million subscribers in total.

In spite of the overall increase in subscribers during the second quarter, Warner Bros. Discovery actually lost subscribers domestically. In total, the company closed Q2 2024 with 52.4 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada, down from the 52.7 million reported for the first quarter of the year, resulting in a loss of around 300,000.

It is possible that Max may see a subscriber bump in the U.S. during the current quarter, thanks to the recent ability to bundle Max with Hulu and Disney+ from as little as $16.99 a month.

Internationally, Warner Bros. Discovery’s direct-to-consumer subscriber base increased to 50.8 million during the second quarter, up from the 46.9 million reported at the end of the first quarter, resulting in an increase of around 3.9 million subscribers.

Max has been continuing its European expansion over the past few months, most recently with launches in France and Belgium. The availability of the streaming service in more countries has likely contributed to the subscriber growth seen internationally during the most recent quarter.

In total, Max is now available in more than 65 countries and territories.

In terms of DTC Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), the company saw an overall increase from $7.83 in Q1 to $8 in Q2 2024. This was thanks to domestic ARPU increasing from $11.72 to $12.08 and international ARPU increasing from $3.75 to $3.85.
