If you already use Google One as your cloud-storage solution and upgrade to the 2 TB plan, Google will give you a Chromecast with Google TV 4K streaming player for free.
The Chromecast with Google TV 4K might not be the newest Chromecast you can buy today, but it is still a better option thanks to the inclusion of 4K support. At $49.99, buying the 4K model outright is also easier and cheaper than paying for a Google One 2 TB subscription.
That said, if you are already paying for Google One, and in need of additional storage space, and would also like a new streaming player, then this deal might be worth checking out.
Google appears to have began offering this promotion on June 12, and the deal is currently due to end on July 11, 2023, so you have about a week left to decide on whether upgrading is the best option for you. You also then have up to July 26, 2023 to actually redeem the free streaming player.
According to the promotional details, it is only possible to get a free Chromecast with Google TV 4K when upgrading from the 100 GB or 200 GB plan to the 2 TB plan. In other words, you probably can’t take advantage of this offer if you are upgrading directly from Google’s free 15 GB plan.
In addition, you will also need to pay for the annual Google One subscription as well. This requirement is presumably designed to remove the ability for people to to upgrade for a month or two, get the Google TV player for free, and then downgrade their subscription to a cheaper level again.
Considering the 2 TB Google One plan costs $99.99 per year, this deal basically unlocks access to 2 TB of online storage space and a free Chromecast with Google TV 4K for around $100, resulting in a saving of $49.99 when compared to paying for the subscription and streaming player separately.
As this is also a recurring subscription, the subscriber will also automatically be charged another $100 for the second year, unless they cancel or downgrade the subscription before the end of the first year.
It should be noted that there are some other restrictions as well. For example, the offer is only available to those “who have not participated in a Google One hardware promotional offer within the last two years” and to those “who were not subscribed to a 2 TB monthly or annual plan or above at the start of the offer period.”
Due to these additional eligibility limitations, it might be worth checking your Google One benefits (here and while signed in to your Google account) to confirm individual you are able to take advantage of the offer before upgrading.
Another potential downside is that Google will only give you the Snow 4K Chromecast for free. One of the benefits of the 4K model over the cheaper HD version is the ability to choose from other color options, including Sky and Sunrise.
