Starz ended the second calendar quarter of 2024 (Lionsgate fiscal Q1 2025) with 21.3 million subscribers in North America. It is worth noting that Lionsgate has made a change to the way it now reports Starz subscriber data.

Previously, Lionsgate would report U.S. Starz subscribers under ‘Starz Domestic.’ However, Lionsgate has now changed this category to ‘Starz North America.’ This isn’t just a name change either, as the category also now includes Canadian subscribers.

For reference, Lionsgate has provided updated subscriber counts for past quarters to reflect the transition from domestic to North America, and the following comparisons are based on that provided information.

Starz closed out the first calendar quarter of the year with 13.38 million OTT subscribers in North America. With 13.2 million reported for the second quarter, the service lost around 180,000 streaming subscribers during the three-month period.

Considering Starz closed out the second calendar quarter of 2023 with 12.51 million OTT subscribers, the service added around 700,000 on a year over year basis.

Along with the drop in OTT subscribers, Starz encountered another decline in linear subscribers. After closing out the first quarter of the year with 8.42 million, Starz ended the most recent quarter with 8.1 million, resulting in a drop of 320,000 subscribers.

Overall, Starz finished the quarter with a total of 21.3 million OTT and linear subscribers in North America. With a total of 21.8 million reported at the end of the first quarter, Starz lost 500,000 subscribers during the most recent quarter. On a year-over-year basis, Starz lost a total of 690,000 North American subscribers.

As a reminder, Starz added $1 to the cost of a subscription earlier this week in the United States. Following the latest price increase, a Starz subscription now costs $10.99 a month.
