Sling TV Offers Free Previews for Select Networks During Coronavirus Outbreak

Sling My TV

Sling TV is now making available a number of channels that usually require a subscription free for a limited time. These include some popular premium networks, such as Hallmark.

This week, Sling announced a new “Stay in & Sling ” initiative designed to help those who are spending more time at home due to coronavirus outbreak fill the time with access to free content. At the time it remained to be seen what was new with this initiative considering all of the content Sling initially pointed to was already free through Sling.

However, today the service announced it was making available a number of typically paid-for networks free for a limited time and citing this as part of its “Stay in & Sling” plan. Here’s a list of the channels and when they are free until.

  • FX Movie Channel: Free until April 17
  • Nat Geo WILD: Free until April 17
  • Game Show Network: Free until April 30
  • Hallmark: Free until May 13
  • Hallmark Drama: Free until May 13
  • Hallmark Movies & Mysteries: Free until May 13
  • Sundance TV: Free until April 17
  • CNBC: Free until April 20

It should be noted, that these channels are not free to everyone, but free to existing Sling TV subscribers. In addition, not all channels are free to all Sling subscribers. For example, CNBC is now free for Sling Blue and Sling Blue + Orange subscribers, but not those signed up to the Sling Orange plan. The service also explains this is not a finite list and will be updated as and when any other networks become free.

Other options for free video streaming

While these networks and channels are now free to existing Sling TV subscribers, you don’t need to subscribe to Sling to gain access to free content. The service also provides a Sling Free experience which lets anyone watch a selection of TV shows and movies for free without an active subscription, or even a free account. Users can simply head to the Sling website, browse as a guest and choose from the select content that’s available for free.

Alternatively, there are a number of services consumers can access which are free in general. For those looking for access to select live TV channels, options include Redbox, Xumo and Pluto TV. Alternatively, IMDbTV and Tubi both provide access to a selection of on-demand movies and shows for free. While IMDbTV does require free users to sign up for a free account, Tubi does not.
