The Showtime app is all set to be shut down by the end of this year. While the exact date the app will stop working has yet to be revealed, the move is part of the merging of Paramount Plus and Showtime into a single streaming service.
In reality, the merger is less of a merging and more a case of Paramount Plus swallowing Showtime whole. Following the merge, Showtime will only be available as part of the premium upgrade to the ad-supported Paramount Plus plan.
The new Paramount+ with Showtime plan is now confirmed to be launching on June 27th, 2023, in the United States. After which, the company will begin preparing to shut down the standalone Showtime application.
While there’s currently no word on exactly when the app will shut down, Paramount has made it clear that it will happen before the end of this year. For those that were already using the Paramount Plus app to access Showtime content, the closure of the standalone Showtime app is unlikely to matter all that much.
For those that are still using the Showtime app, they will be able to continue using the app until it is eventually shut down. At which point, it is presumed those subscribers would have been moved over to the Paramount Plus app and subscription.
There is also a linear Showtime channel that can be added to various live TV packages, and that is also set to be rebranded as well. Later in the year, the channel will be renamed as Paramount+ with Showtime.
In addition to the closing of the Showtime app and the launch of the Paramount with Showtime tier, subscribers will also be facing a price increase in general. From June 27, the cost of the Essential Plan will increase to $5.99 per month while the existing Premium plan will be replaced with the new Paramount+ with Showtime plan, increasing the cost to $11.99 per month.
