The number of Roku ‘Streaming Households’ increased to 81.6 million during the first quarter of 2024. While Roku has always referred to its users as ‘Active Accounts’, the company now appears to have rebranded this metric as ‘Streaming Households.’

Either way, the 81.6 million reported for Q1 2024 is an increase of 1.6 million on the 80 million reported for Q4 2023. When looking at the year-over-year change, Roku added exactly 10 million streaming households. Roku reported 71.6 million active accounts for the end of Q1 2023.

In terms of hours streamed, the other metric Roku routinely reports, the company closed the first quarter of 2024 with 30.8 billion streaming hours. This was up around 1.7 billion on the 29.1 billion streaming hours reported for the fourth quarter of 2023, and up 5.7 billion on the 25.1 billion streaming hours reported for Q1 2023.

On the revenue front, Roku reported a total of $754.9 million in platform revenue, up 19% on the $634.6 million reported for Q1 2023. This was in addition to $126.5 million in devices revenue, which was also up 19% on the $106.4 million reported for the first quarter of the previous year. As to be expected following the Holiday quarter, both platform and devices revenues were down when compared to the fourth quarter of 2023.

In other Roku news, the company recently confirmed not one, but two security incidents impacting users. In both incidents, credential stuffing was said to have resulted in a number of accounts becoming compromised, and used to make unauthorized subscription and Roku hardware purchases through the account’s existing payment method.

The company also recently launched its new and smarter Roku Pro Series TVs and began rolling out Roku OS 13 to devices.
