Philo Subscription Price Rising to $25 Per Month on June 8

Philo is increasing the cost of a subscription to $25 per month for new subscribers, starting from June 8. While price increases within the live TV streaming industry have become an increasingly common occurrence, this is an unusual move for Philo. However, in spite of the impending price increase, Philo remains focused on offering an affordable service and continues to be a much cheaper option than other services, including fuboTV, Hulu Live TV and YouTube TV.

Philo has been around for some time now and offers good live TV value for money. Technically, the service has never previously encountered a price increase. This is only technically, however, as the base cost of a Philo subscription has risen over the years. The reason for this is Philo first launched at $16 per month and then introduced an upgraded $20 per month plan with more channels. While both plans remained available for some time, Philo eventually discontinued the $16 package, resulting in the base cost of a subscription increasing without an actual price increase having taken effect.

However, Philo is now encountering a price increase and one that’s due to go live within the coming weeks. Starting on June 8, the base cost of a Philo subscription will rise to $25 per month. The change only affects new subscribers with Philo confirming that anyone signed up to the service already (or by the time the increase goes live) will be locked in at their current price, avoiding the increase altogether.

In line with the price rises that have plagued other live TV streaming services, Philo explained its increase is the result of the continued and escalating costs of its own. However, the announcement specifically goes on to explain that Philo hasn’t taken this decision lightly and continues to remain focused on being an affordable live TV option.

DVR upgrade with price increase

In spite of the comparatively low cost of a Philo subscription, the service does offer additional features to subscribers, including the ability to stream on multiple devices and an unlimited cloud DVR. While Philo recordings only stay recorded for thirty days before they are automatically deleted, that’s also now set to change. When the price increase takes effect, subscribers will gain the ability to keep recordings for up to one year, marking a significant increase in time.

It is worth noting that the expanded recording time is directly tied to the price increase. In other words, it is not only arriving at the same time, but is also dependent on the user paying the higher rate. For those subscribers who intend to remain locked in at their cheaper existing price, they won’t gain access to the longer DVR length. This decision is optional, as Philo will be adding the ability for locked-in subscribers to upgrade to the longer recording time, albeit with their subscription price also increasing to the new rate.
