The Peacock exclusive AFC Wild Card game was the most-streamed live event in U.S. history, according to Comcast, who confirmed almost 28 million people tuned in to watch at some point during the game.
With the Chiefs-Dolphins game the NFL’s first-ever exclusively live streamed playoff game, those wanting to watch the action unfold as it happened needed to sign up for a Peacock Premium subscription. While Peacock Premium typically costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year, the streaming service was offering 50% off the annual plan price in the leadup to the game.
According to Comcast, “viewers flocked to Peacock” to watch the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins. So much so that the game apparently set a record “for the most-streamed live event in U.S. history.” Comcast also said the event resulted in “driving the Internet to its largest U.S. usage ever on a single day and the largest Internet event ever.”
The Peacock exclusive was credited with reaching a total of 27.6 million viewers, peaking at an average of 24.6 million viewers in the second quarter (from 9:15-9:30 p.m. ET).
Based on the same data from Nielsen, the game obtained an average audience of approximately 23 million viewers across Peacock, NBC stations in Miami and Kansas City, and on mobile with NFL+. All of which resulted in the game ranking as the most-streamed event ever in the U.S.
With Peacock being the primary way to stream the game, it should come as no surprise that the Wild Card matchup also resulted in Peacock’s largest single day ever as well. According to Comcast, Peacock saw a record 16.3 million concurrent devices.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our partnership with Peacock and are thrilled with the results of the first-ever exclusively live streamed NFL playoff game,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “To best serve our fans, we need to ensure games are available to them as their viewing habits change and this includes digital distribution as we continue to help shape the future of the sports and entertainment industry.”
Peacock continues to become an important service for live sports, and data like this will likely further motivate the streaming service to continue investing in more live sports in the future. All of which also suggests sports fans are likely to encounter more Peacock exclusive games and events in the future as well.
