If you’ve been thinking about signing up to DirecTV Stream to catch San Diego Padres games, or are already a DirecTV Stream subscriber and planning to watch live, it is worth being aware that these MLB games are only available to those subscribed to the Choice package or higher.
As a reminder, Padres games were previously available through Bally Sports San Diego. However, earlier this week, Major League Baseball confirmed that it had assumed broadcast control of Padres games and struck a number of deals with other providers to broadcast those games.
One of those providers was DirecTV, with the confirmation that games can now be watched live on DirecTV (Ch. 694-3), DirecTV Stream (Ch. 694) and U-verse (HD Ch. 1781/ SD Ch. 781). However, what wasn’t explicitly stated at the time is that Padres games require a minimum of Choice, DirecTV Stream’s $99 per month live TV package.
While DirecTV does also offer a cheaper Entertainment package that’s priced at $74.99 per month, Entertainment subscribers won’t be able to watch Padres games with their current plan and will need to upgrade to Choice.
In reality, this probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as one of the main differences between the Entertainment and Choice plans is that the latter unlocks access to more channels, including various Regional Sports Networks. However, and due to the way the announcement was made, it is worth being aware of before signing up.
Providing a subscriber is signed up to Choice or higher, and lives in the Padres territory, they will have access to high-definition coverage of all upcoming Padres games on DirecTV Stream.
For those actively shopping around for a way to watch Padres games, in addition to DirecTV Stream and watching over-the-air local feeds, Padres games can also be streamed with a Fubo live TV subscription, or with a standalone MLB.TV subscription.
