Google’s follow up to the Chromecast with Google TV won’t be a traditional Chromecast, with Google seemingly ditching the dongle design in favor of a more traditional table-top streaming device.
Well, traditional is used very loosely here, as although this will be a box-based device that sits on the table, the images and details shared by 9to5Google point to a unique-looking device. One that somewhat borrows from Chromecast, Nest Hub and Pixel products.
In addition to moving on from the traditional Chromecast dongle design, it also looks like Google is ready to move on from the name as well. According to the report, Google’s new streaming player will launch as ‘Google TV Streamer.’
As 9to5Google points out, the slanted design results in a much sleeker device than a traditional set-top box / streaming player. The player is also pill-shaped, which is something commonly seen in Android, as well as a shape commonly used for Pixel accessories, including the Pixel Stand and Pixel Tablet Charging Speaker Dock.
In terms of the remote, the overall design appears to be the same as before. However, the report does note that the new remote is expected to be a little longer. There also appears to be a rotation of the buttons. The volume up and down are now on the front of the remote (moved from the side) and the Home and voice command (Google Assistant) buttons have been switched around.
While no details were provided on the price, the design and table-top nature of the device leads us to assume the new Google TV Streamer is likely to be more expensive than the current Chromecast with Google TV models.
