Netflix Ended Q3 2023 With 247 Million Subscribers (An Increase Of Nearly 9 Million)

Netflix added nearly 9 million new subscribers in the third quarter of 2023, taking the total number of global subscribers to the streaming service up to 247 million.

Throughout 2023, Netflix has been making changes to its plans in a bid to help increase subscriptions. Most notably, the introduction of Netflix Households which makes it harder for subscribers to share a subscription with someone outside of their household. With that change taking effect in May, the third quarter is the first full quarter under the company’s new paid sharing rules.

As part of the company’s Q3 2023 earnings report, Netflix confirmed it ended the third quarter with 247.15 million global subscribers. This is an increase of around 8.76 million subscribers on the second quarter of 2023, and an increase of around 24 million subscribers when compared to the end of the third quarter of 2022.

Netflix also confirmed that its paid sharing strategy and changes are working, citing its “strong membership growth over the past two quarters” as proof. According to Netflix, the “cancel reaction” to its sharing changes also “continues to be low.”

In terms of the US and Canada, specifically, Netflix confirmed it ended the third quarter of 2023 with 77.32 million subscribers. This represents an increase of 1.75 million on the 75.57 million reported at the end of the second quarter, and a year-over-year increase of around 3.9 million when compared to the third quarter of 2022.

Earlier this week, Netflix confirmed plans to launch its first-ever live sports event next month. The Netflix Cup sees F1 drivers and professional golfers partner up in a unique tournament, with the whole event available to watch live on November 14, 2023.
