Netflix ended the second quarter of 2024 with more than 277 million global subscribers. The number represents an increase of around 8 million subscribers during the past three months alone. It also represents an increase of around 30 million when compared to the second quarter of 2023.
In terms of the U.S. and Canada, Netflix closed the most recent quarter with 84.1 million subscribers. This is equivalent to an increase of 1.4 million on the previous quarter, and an increase of around 8.5 million on the 75.5 million reported for the second quarter of last year.
Elsewhere, Netflix added 2.2 million subscribers (up to 93.9 million) in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), 1.5 million subscribers (up to 49.2 million) in Latin America (LATAM), and 2.8 million subscribers (up to 50.3 million) in Asia–Pacific (APAC).
In spite of gains in all these markets around the world, Netflix expects subscriber additions in the current quarter to be lower than they were in the third quarter of last year.
One of the reasons Netflix suggests for lower subscribers in the third quarter is that Q3 2024 was the first full quarter Netflix reaped the benefits of its password-sharing crackdown. To put this point into perspective, Netflix added almost 9 million new subscribers during the third quarter of last year.
While the company did not provide an update on how many people are now using its ad-supported tier, Netflix did confirm that ads tier membership grew 34% during the most recent quarter.
In terms of content, Netflix pointed to Bridgerton, Baby Reindeer, The Roast of Tom Brady and Under Paris as all proving to be popular with the userbase during the second quarter of 2024. In particular, Bridgerton proved very popular, with the franchise pulling in 172 million views during the quarter.
