Netflix might become home to two NFL games this Christmas. In fact, Netflix securing the rights for these games has now been suggested as a reason for a potential delay in the National Football League releasing the 2024-2025 regular season schedule.

Details on the potential Netflix deal come from John Ourand (via Puck News), following Boomer Esiason’s suggestion that Netflix could secure the rights to at least one of the Christmas Day games.

Previously, many had expected the schedule to be released on the second Thursday in May. According to Ourand, and citing “a bevy of sources,” the NFL is still negotiating with Netflix over the two Christmas Day games, which has led to the delay in the schedule’s release. Considering negotiations are still understood to be ongoing, nothing has been signed, and a deal might not get done. There is also no suggestion that any deal for Christmas games would automatically result in more NFL games coming to Netflix in the future.

Netflix is becoming more interested in hosting live events and sports in general and NFL games would be a major step forward in this respect. While the streaming service has routinely released live events, including live sports events, throughout this year, Christmas Day football games could prove to be one of its most popular yet.

Of course, this is all assuming a deal between Netflix and the NFL can be agreed. Considering the NFL is now expected to release its 2024-2025 schedule on May 15, we should find out for sure where football fans can watch this year’s Christmas Day games next week.
