Max is now much better at recommending content for subscribers to watch. At the same time, it is also now much better at knowing when to stop recommending content.
This is all thanks to a new homepage personalization system that has recently rolled out. While the new Homepage and system began rolling out in late 2023, the rollout only completed at the end of last month, according to Variety.
As to be expected, the new system relies even more heavily on a subscriber’s viewing history and behavior. More interesting, however, is that the system not only uses subscriber behavior to decide which content to suggest, but also which content to not recommend. As an example, it is now better at avoiding duplicating suggestions in different categories, which should result in more recommendations being displayed in view.
The system is also now better at noticing when a subscriber has ignored a recommendation on multiple occasions. This ignoring behavior is an indication to the system that the subscriber doesn’t particularly like the suggested titles and this will now lead to their removal in favor of other titles that might be better received.
With this in mind, adding titles to a watchlist is likely to be more important than ever before, and especially for those often avoid adding titles due to them routinely being recommended.
For reference, the new system doesn’t just tailor individual title recommendations, but categories as a whole as well. In other words, the categories that now show up on one subscriber’s home screen are likely to now be very different to the categories on another subscriber’s home screen. This also applies to different profiles sharing the same subscription.
