Hulu offers students the option to subscribe to the ad-supported plan for just $1.99 a month. The student plan results in a significant discount on the usual price, and the discounted rate is available to both new and existing subscribers. However, as this is a student discount, it will require proof of student status.
A Hulu subscription costs a minimum of $7.99 a month. This is for the ‘With Ads’ plan, with the ‘No Ads’ version costing $17.99 a month. Unfortunately, Hulu does not offer a student discount on the Hulu (No Ads) plan, so the only way to save as a student is on the Hulu (With Ads) subscription. Still, with the price as low as $1.99, students can save $6 each month on the cost of Hulu.
Another point to be aware of is that Hulu doesn’t offer a free trial to new student subscribers either. Considering Hulu does offer a 30-day free trial to all non-student new subscribers, some students may want to consider signing up as a non-student to take advantage of the free trial before signing up for a student plan.
How to sign up for a Hulu student discount
Students will need to verify their student status to be eligible to sign up for Hulu’s student discount. Similar to many other streaming services, Hulu uses the SheerID third-party verification service to confirm student status at a U.S. Title IV accredited college or university.
The verification process involves providing some personal information with SheerID, including your first name, last name, college/university name, and date of birth.

As a reminder, existing Hulu subscribers can only sign up for a student plan as an existing Hulu (With Ads) subscriber. If already signed up to Hulu (No Ads) plan or the Disney Bundle, existing subscribers won’t be able to sign up for a student subscription without first canceling their existing subscription, or downgrading to the Hulu (With Ads) plan.
Likewise, there is no option to save on the cost of a Hulu Live TV subscription as a student.
Combine Hulu and Spotify and save
For those that would like access to both music and TV, it is also possible for students to combine Hulu and Spotify and only pay $5.99 a month. Considering Spotify Premium typically costs $10.99 a month, and Hulu (With Ads) costs $7.99 a month, the $5.99 student bundle price offers a monthly saving of $12.99.
Similar to the standard Hulu student discount, Spotify Premium can only be bundled with the basic Hulu (With Ads) plan. In other words, it cannot be bundled with ad-free Hulu, the Disney Bundle, or Hulu Live TV.
Also similar to the Hulu student discount, Spotify uses SheerID to verify student status and confirm eligibility. The process is mostly the same and can be started by heading over to the Spotify student sign-up page. Once a Spotify account has been created and student status verified, the subscriber will then be able to create a Hulu account and access the library of on-demand content through the Hulu app.
If opting to go this bundle route, the Hulu subscription will technically be managed through Spotify, so all future changes will need to be made through Spotify as well. While existing Hulu (With Ads) subscribers can also take advantage of the Sportify bundle, they will need to switch their Hulu billing to Spotify as well.
