Hulu Live TV had 4.4 million subscribers, as of October 1, 2022. Even though this is an increase on the previous quarter, Hulu hasn’t seen much improvement in the number of people using its live TV service over the course of 2022 as a whole.
The latest subscriber number was revealed as part of Disney’s most recent quarterly earnings report (PDF) and is in reference to the third calendar quarter (July-September) of the year. Disney reports its results based on its own fiscal year, so the 4.4 million also relates to Disney’s fiscal Q4 2022 and year-end.
Compared to the previous quarter, this marks an increase of around 400,000 subscribers. However, the third calendar quarter of 2022 was roughly 100,000 down on the previous quarter, and 300,000 down when compared to January 1st, 2022. As a result, Hulu Live TV ended the latest quarter with 100,000 more subscribers than it started the year with. When comparing year-over-year, the latest results paint a better picture. Hulu Live TV finished the third calendar quarter of last year (Disney fiscal Q4 2021) with 4 million subscribers exactly, resulting in an increase of 400,000.
In addition to its live TV base, Hulu also closed out the latest quarter with 42.8 million basic Hulu subscribers. When combining the live TV and SVOD-only subscribers, Hulu started October 2022 with a total of 47.2 million subscribers, up from the 43.8 million on October 2, 2021.
In comparison to the rest of the live TV streaming market, Hulu Live TV remains well positioned overall. YouTube TV was serving live TV to more than 5 million subscribers at last count, Sling TV closed its latest quarter with 2.4 million, and fuboTV ended its third quarter with 1.2 million. As has been the case for some time now, DirecTV doesn’t report specific subscriber numbers for DirecTV Stream.
Elsewhere in the Disney ecoystem, Disney Plus ended the latest quarter with 164.2 million total global subscribers, up from the 118.1 million a year before. This further breaks down to include 46.4 million U.S. and Canada subscribers, up from 38.8 million last year. ESPN Plus also finished the latest quarter with a notable increase, up to 24.3 million compared to the 17.1 million reported in October 2021.
