HBO Max costs $14.99 per month through Hulu, but there are some things to be aware of before adding the premium add-on to a subscription. Most notably, even though a HBO Max subscription is being bundled with Hulu, not all of the HBO Max shows and movies will be available to watch through the Hulu app.
Hulu offers both live TV and on demand plans with the price of the standard subscription starting at $5.99 per month or $64.99 per month for those that want access to live TV channels. Regardless of whether signed up to the basic or plus live TV package, Hulu subscribers can bundle HBO Max with their plan.
The HBO Max add-on costs $14.99 per month on top of the cost of a Hulu subscription. This is the same price as a subscription that’s set up directly through HBO Max. In other words, it is not any cheaper to sign up through Hulu. While HBO Max also offers a cheaper ad-supported plan for $9.99, those signing up through Hulu only have the option to add the more expensive and ad-free HBO Max plan at $14.99 to their package. Typically, those signing up to HBO Max through Hulu for the first time are able to take advantage of a seven-day free trial before having to make the first monthly payment.
Adding HBO Max to Hulu is fairly easy to do and the process is no different to how any other add-on or upgrade is added, with the option available in the settings menu.
How to add HBO Max to Hulu:
- Visit Hulu
- Log in if required
- Click on the profile icon in the top right corner
- Click on “Account”
- Click on “Manage Add-ons” (under “Your Subscription”)
- Click the “+” icon next to HBO Max
- Confirm the subscription change
Once added to a compatible plan, HBO Max channels and content will be available to watch directly in the app. However, that doesn’t mean all of the content available through HBO Max can be watched in the Hulu app.
You can’t watch all of HBO Max on Hulu
Although HBO Max is available through Hulu, the add-on doesn’t automatically open up access to everything HBO Max has to offer. For example, HBO Max originals and exclusives are only available to stream through the HBO Max app and not through the Hulu app. For the most part, Hulu app users will be able to access HBO content, including the linear HBO channels.
That’s not to say Hulu subscribers can’t watch any of these originals or exclusives, it just means the subscriber will also need to download the separate HBO Max app as well. A Hulu subscription comes with TV Everywhere support for a number of apps, including HBO Max. With TV Everywhere support available, Hulu subscribers can use their existing Hulu subscription account details to log in to the HBO Max app. After signing in, the Hulu subscriber will then be able to stream everything HBO Max has to offer.
Due to this, anyone signing up to HBO Max through Hulu will need to keep in mind that they will need to switch apps to access certain shows or movies. If that is an issue, then it may just be worth signing up to HBO Max directly. That’s not to say there are no benefits to combining a subscription, as there are. For one thing, HBO content is available through the Hulu interface, and if that’s the main reason for considering bundling the two services, then it may not matter that the additional Max content requires another app. Likewise, some may prefer the easier ability to manage both subscriptions through the one service.

Once added to a Hulu plan, the subscriber will then be able to stream HBO content through the Hulu app. For mostly everything else, the subscriber will need to download and sign in to the HBO Max app. Therefore, both apps will still need to be installed on the same devices for any individuals or households that are looking to maximize the HBO Max experience.
While it in an inconvenience to have to use two different apps, bundling HBO Max with Hulu may make it easier to manage the subscriptions overall, and especially if the individual or household is already bundling other premium services with Hulu as well.
