HBO Max now allows potential subscribers the option to watch select show episodes for free and before signing up to the service. This follows on from a similar option that HBO Max offered to Snapchat users, allowing them to watch select episodes for free in the Snapchat app and even with friends.
HBO Max appears to be a service that is growing in popularity and partly thanks to its exclusive originals and the ability to watch Warner Bros. movies on the same day they are released in theaters. However, a subscription does cost $14.99 per month, making it one of the more expensive standalone services. Although HBO Max has since launched a cheaper, ad-supported tier, it does come with some limitations compared to the main subscription option, including the lack of same-day theater releases.
Now, in a bid to attract new subscribers, HBO Max has started allowing consumers to watch episodes for free. Unlike the Snapchat move, no third-party app is needed with the free episodes available to watch within the HBO Max app. Of course, this does then mean the user will need to download the HBO Max app on one of their devices and that’s likely to be a major first step on the way to signing up to a subscription.
HBO Max has confirmed that its ‘free experience’ is initially limited to just 13 episodes. However, they are episodes from some of the service’s more popular shows, including Batwoman, Game Of Thrones, Euphoria, Lovecraft Country and The Flight Attendant.
HBO Max episodes now available for free:
- Batwoman (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Euphoria (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Game of Thrones (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Harley Quinn (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Lovecraft Country (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Love Life (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Perry Mason (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Raised By Wolves (Season 1, Episode 1)
- The Flight Attendant (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Titans (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Veneno (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Warrior (Season 1, Episode 1)
- Doom Patrol (Season 2, Episode 1)
While the free episodes of each show are mainly resigned to the initial pilot episode, WarnerMedia did explain that the list of free-to-watch episodes will change over time. For now, the option to watch HBO Max episodes for free is limited to those based in the US.
While allowing consumers the option to watch some of its originals’ episodes for free is a positive move, that’s not quite the same as a typical free trial. HBO Max used to offer a free trial, and still does if subscribing though YouTube TV, but the option was removed last year for those signing up to the service directly. The ability to now watch select episodes for free appears to be a way to offer a taste of what HBO Max has to offer, but not the full experience without paying.
