Google is now in the process of adding a Quick Access row to the Android TV Home screen. The new feature is designed to make it quicker for users to find something to watch.
Most people who pick up a new smart TV or streaming player that’s powered by Android will find that it is running on the newer Google TV operating system. However, for all of those still using Android TV, Google has continued to roll out updates that improve the user experience and bring it more in line with Google TV.
The Quick Access row is one of the latest improvements to come to Android TV, and one which isn’t currently available on Google TV. According to Google, the new row is only rolling out to users in the United States and Google has explained that the rollout may take a few weeks to complete.
Once available, the Quick Access row can be found directly under the Favorites row and consists of shortcuts like Play Next, Free Live TV, Top Selling Movies, Popular Movies and Shows, and Trending on Google. Clicking on any of these tabs will help to narrow down the content available on Android TV.
In reality, these new tabs won’t massively improve the filter options. Instead, they appear to be mostly just shortcuts to existing areas within the interface. For example, the Free Live TV button is expected to redirect users to the Live tab, or even the Free TV channels app that was only very recently added to the Favorites row directly about the new Quick Access row.
Still, if the new shortcuts do make it easier or quicker for some Android TV users to get to where they want to, then the addition of the new row will have been worth it.
