fuboTV ended the second quarter of 2022 with a little under 947,000 subscribers, resulting in a decline compared to the previous quarter but a big increase when compared to the same quarter of the year before. The year to date has been pretty good to fuboTV. For example, fuboTV ended the first quarter of 2022 with 1.056 million subscribers in North America, a year-over-year increase of 81 percent.
Previously, fuboTV had indicated that it expected to see a decline in the second quarter with the expectation that the service would close out Q2 with somewhere between 965 and 975,000 North American subscribers. However, the company did only expect this to be a temporary drop, with the longer-term view being that it would close out 2022 with as many as 1.465-1.485 million subscribers.
In reality, the drop was slightly more than fuboTV had previously expected, with the live TV streaming service ending the second quarter of this year with 946,735 subscribers. Although this was a decline compared to the quarter before, it was a 41 percent year-over-year increase. As detailed in the earnings report, this number was just for fuboTV’s North American (U.S. and Canada) market. Elsewhere, (France, Spain), fuboTV closed the second quarter of 2022 with 347,000 paid subscribers.
As the total number of subscribers was slightly lower than expected, fuboTV is also now predicting the end of year total to be lower than previous suggested, although still up on the current total and the subscriber count at the beginning of 2021.
In relation to the rest of the market, fuboTV remains some way behind the other major live TV streaming services. Sling TV recently published its latest numbers, and although it saw a quarter-over-quarter decline, it still stood at over 2 million subscribers. Likewise, while Hulu remains around the 4 million marker, YouTube TV recently confirmed it has passed the 5 million subscriber milestone. Compared to these numbers, fuboTV still has some way to go, as it continues to chip away at the difference.
