Epix Is Now MGM Plus

Epix is now MGM Plus. In spite of the new look and the new name, subscribers shouldn’t expect too much change to their service other than more shows and movies becoming available to watch in the future. For those that had yet to subscribe to Epix, the rebranding to MGM+ offers a reminder of the streaming service, and what it has to offer.

Epix officially announced the rebranding back in September of 2022, confirming that the change would take place in January of 2023. Since then, it had become clear that Jan. 15 was set as the date when the changeover would happen. With the day now here, the change has taken effect for both the standalone streaming service and the linear TV channel.

Considering Epix is a subsidiary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), the rebranding from Epix to MGM Plus is more of a merging of the two under a single unified brand. For additional background, Amazon owns MGM after completing its acquisition of the company in early 2022.

For fans of Epix shows, not too much should change, with the new MGM Plus service expected to continue to carry much of the same catalog. In fact, the premiere of season three of Godfather of Harlem is actually available to stream on MGM Plus starting from today. Likewise, The second season of From is expected to land on MGM Plus in April.

In addition to the various renewals, MGM+ is also expected to launch a number of new ‘MGM+ Originals’ in the future, including Murf the Surf (arriving February 5th) and A Spy Among Friends (arriving March 12th).

In terms of the price, no changes are expected here either. A standard Epix subscription was priced at $5.99 per month, or $49.99 per year when signed up to the annual plan, and MGM Plus continues to be priced at the same monthly and annual rates, pending any changes in the future.

For those that were previously subscribed to Epix through a third-party, things should continue as they did before and without any interruptions to the service. Companies like Philo and Sling TV have already confirmed that they will continue to offer Epix as MGM Plus, with no change to the price.

Likewise, with Amazon owning MGM, it should come as no surprise that MGM+ will be available as a Prime Video channel. Taking over from the previous Epix Prime Video channel, MGM Plus through Amazon is priced at $5.99 per month, following the completion of a 7-day free trial.

    Never going to happen

When it was announced that Amazon was buying MGM Studios I was so excited to have all that content on my Prime Video subscription finally bringing up to par with my Disney/HULU+ and Paramount+, but no, unfortunately it was not meant to be. Amazon wants to join the overpriced ranks of Netflix at $21/month. While that still gives you much more than Netflix, I won’t be adding yet another subscription to my monthly tab.
