DirecTV Stream is available on a number of smart TVs, streaming players and other devices, including popular models from Apple, Amazon, Android and Roku. As the list of compatible devices still has some support gaps, some homes may find DirecTV Stream isn’t going to be the best live TV streaming service for them.
Before delving into the devices that work with DirecTV Stream, it is worth taking a moment to point out that DirecTV Stream is accessed directly through the DirecTV app. This is the same app that’s used by DirecTV and DirecTV via Internet customers, as there is no standalone DirecTV Stream app available.
DirecTV Stream compatible platforms:
- Amazon Fire TV
- Android mobile
- Android TV
- Apple TV
- DirecTV Gemini
- Fire OS
- Google TV
- iOS
- iPadOS
- Roku
- Samsung TV
- Web browser
For those with a device powered by one of the platforms listed above, the easiest way to check for support is to search for the “DirecTV” app through the device’s app store. If the app is shown in the search results along with the option to download, the device is highly likely to be compatible with DirecTV Stream.
Watching DirecTV Stream on a smart TV
One of the easiest ways to watch DirecTV Stream is directly on a smart TV. However, this is also one of the more limited device categories. For example, DirecTV Stream does not currently support either LG or Vizio smart TVs.
Compatible smart TV devices:
- Amazon Fire TV Edition Smart TVs (2nd Gen or higher)
- Amazon 2-Series
- Amazon 4-Series
- Insignia
- Amazon Omni Series
- TCL
- Toshiba
- Android TV / Google TV (Android TV 9 minimum)
- Hisense
- Sharp
- Sony
- Roku TVs (version 9.4 minimum)
- Hisense
- Onn.
- Philips
- Roku Plus Series
- Roku Select Series
- Sharp
- TCL
- Westinghouse
- Samsung TV (version 3.0 minimum)
Considering the DirecTV app is available to download on smart TVs powered by Amazon Fire TV, Android TV (including Google TV) and Roku, many homes will find they can watch DirecTV Stream without having to use an additional device. The same is also the case with Samsung TV owners, so long as their TV model is 2017 or newer.
DirecTV Stream on a streaming player
For those without a compatible smart TV, or those planning on buying a new streaming player, the DirecTV app is available to download on a very similar list of devices to smart TVs.
Compatible streaming players:
- Amazon Fire TV / Fire Stick (2nd Gen or higher)
- Amazon Fire TV Cube
- Android TV players
- Nvidia Shield
- Xiaomi Mi Box
- Apple TV (version 15+ minimum)
- DirecTV Gemini and Gemini Air
- Google Chromecast with Google TV
- Roku 2 (4210X)
- Roku 3 (4200X, 4230X)
- Roku 4 (4400X)
- Roku Express (3700X, 3900X, 3930X)
- Roku Express+ (3710X, 3910X, 3931X)
- Roku Premiere (3920X, 4620X)
- Roku Premiere+ (3921X, 4630X)
- Roku Roku LT (2700X)
- Roku Smart Soundbar (9100X)
- Roku Streaming Stick (3600X, 3800X)
- Roku Streaming Stick+ (3810X, 3811X)
- Roku Ultra (4640X, 4660X, 4661X, 4670X)
Once again, with support for Amazon Fire TV, Android TV (including Google TV) and Roku, homes may find some of their existing devices are already compatible with DirecTV Stream. If switching over from DirecTV (satellite) or DirecTV via Internet, DirecTV’s existing Gemini and Gemini Air devices should also work once connected to the DirecTV Stream account.
Some homes may also find that some of their other devices are supported as well. Take, for example, the Roku Smart Soundbar. In spite of being a sound bar, it does come with Roku built-in, making it possible to download the DirecTV app and bypass any support issues for streaming players or smart TVs that the audio device is connected to.
Other ways to watch DirecTV Stream
For those without a compatible smart TV or streaming player, there are a number of other devices that DirecTV Stream can be accessed on, including mobile devices and computers.
Additional compatible devices:
- Android phones / tablets (Android 7.1 minimum)
- Apple Vision Pro
- Browsers
- Apple Safari (version 13+)
- Google Chrome (version 68+)
- Microsoft Edge (version 114+)
- Fire tablets (Fire OS 7 minimum)
- iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch (version 14 minimum)
For households without a device that supports the DirecTV app, one of the easiest options is to access DirecTV Stream through a browser. With support for Chrome, Edge and Safari, users of most browser-enabled devices should find they can access the service directly through the DirecTV Stream website.
It is worth keeping in mind that device support lists are never final so it is possible that currently unsupported devices could gain support in the future. In the case of older unsupported devices, however, these are probably too old to gain support and will likely need to be replaced with one of the supported devices listed above.
Of course, another option is to consider using a different live TV service altogether.
