The new and cheaper Chromecast with Google TV (HD) streaming player is now available to buy. There had been a number of rumors and reports suggesting that Google would launch a cheaper version of its TV dongle, and with the company’s Pixel hardware event already scheduled for October 6th, that seemed like the likely time. However, Google has opted to release its latest Google TV device a little earlier, which is good news for those looking for a cheaper streaming player.

The biggest selling point with the new streaming player is the significantly lower price. While the standard Chromecast with Google TV sells for $49.99, and will continue to, the 2022 Chromecast with Google TV (HD) sells for just $29.99. However, that cheaper price does come with a notable caveat, the resolution.

Unlike the older Chromecast which is a 4K streaming player, the new model maxes out at 1080p HDR, as suggested by the name. For many households, however, this is likely to be enough, making it a worthwhile purchase.

Speaking of which, the $29.99 price tag does also now make it fairly competitive with other brands. For example, while Amazon and Roku sell a range of cheap sticks and players, their cheapest devices are also priced at $29.99 and are not 4K either. Not only does this mean the new Chromecast directly competes on price, but also at the product level as well.

For those considering picking up the new Chromecast with Google TV (HD), Google has confirmed it is available to buy in the US starting from today. Consumers can either head over to the official Google Store and order one to be delivered or simply head out and pick one up from their local Best Buy. Regardless of whether buying from Google or Best Buy, buyers are currently limited to just the one Chromecast color – Snow.
