The Chromecast with Google TV (4K) was first released back in 2020, making it a fairly old streaming player. While Google has since released a newer Chromecast model, and at a cheaper price, the resolution of the newer version maxes out at HD. What we like about the Chromecast with Google TV 4K
One of the main benefits of the Chromecast with Google TV is Google TV. As this is an evolution of Android TV, it is a great option for those already invested in Google’s services and the wider Android ecosystem.
Once signed in with a Google account, the user gets access to the Google Play Store and its massive library of apps. In addition, Google TV includes a Live tab housing a large selection of free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels. Some of these channels will require the user to download other apps, such as Pluto TV and Tubi, but all of the channels listed in this section are free to watch.
If also a YouTube TV subscriber, the Live tab also integrates channels included with the subscriber’s live TV package, making the overall experience even better.
The Google TV interface in general is also very easy to use. Google is pretty good at recommending content, so users will always be in reach of movie and show suggestions that are based on their streaming habits and the apps downloaded on the device.

What we like about the Fire TV Stick 4K
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K runs on Fire OS and one of the big benefits of this device is the tight integration with Amazon’s services. Specifically, Prime Video. If already signed up to Amazon’s video streaming service, then there is no better way to access Prime Video than on one of Amazon’s own devices.
The Fire TV Stick 4K is also designed with Alexa in mind and has the capability to further enhance the abilities of Amazon’s voice assistant. For example, using voice commands to find, launch and control content on the player, and control compatible smart home products, including dimming lights, viewing camera feeds, and more.
In spite of the low cost, the Fire TV Stick 4K also comes with a pretty decent remote control, and one that we think is better than the Chromecast with Google TV’s remote. If the remote matters, the Fire TV Stick 4K’s remote is one of the best around at this price point.

Why we prefer the Chromecast with Google TV 4K
Both the Chromecast with Google TV and the Fire TV Stick will provide you with a good streaming experience, and at a competitive price, but we feel the Fire TV Stick‘s emphasis on Prime Video makes it a less compelling option for general buyers. Again, if a Prime Video subscriber, and actively using the streaming service, then there’s arguably no better device for you. However, if Prime Video is something you don’t have access to, or a service you don’t particularly use very often, then we feel the Chromecast with Google TV is a better buy in general.
Basically, if you are a big Alexa or Prime Video user then we recommend the Fire TV Stick 4K. For everyone else, we recommend the Chromecast with Google TV 4K.
We also prefer the look and design of the Chromecast with Google TV. If you were to see the two side by side in a store, there is no question that the Chromecast is more eye-catching and unique looking. Not to mention, the 4K model is available to buy in different colors.
A potential downside with the Chromecast with Google TV is the smaller and more limited remote, so that might be something to keep in mind when choosing between these two popular streaming players.
