Disney Plus: How to Cancel via Website, Android or iPhone

John Finn Avatar
Cancel Disney+

It is easy to cancel a Disney+ subscription although there are two important points to understand before you do. The first is that cancelling Disney+ does not delete or cancel a Disney account. The second is how a Disney+ subscription is cancelled depends entirely on the method used to start the subscription to begin with.

Disney+ is one of the newer subscription streaming services to arrive, considering it only launched in November, 2019. In spite of its young age, Disney+ had a major impact on the market from day one. Not only did millions of subscriptions start on launch day, but the service has continually added new subscribers ever since. For example, by April 2020, Disney+ claimed more than 50 million subscribers and by August of the same year, that number had risen to more than 60 million.

With so many using the streaming service, it is understandable that there will be a high number of people who will be looking to cancel Disney+ during the year. While the process of cancelling is not complicated, there are caveats to be aware of and they are discussed later in this guide. In the meantime, those looking for the navigation instructions to cancel through the Disney+ website, or through a subscription billed by Apple or Google, use the links below to jump to the relevant section.

How to cancel Disney+ through the website

The easiest way to cancel a Disney+ subscription is through the main website. However, this option is only available to those who have signed up directly through Disney.

  1. Head to the Disney+ website
  2. Tap or click on “log in” in the top-right corner
  3. Select Profile
  4. Tap or click on Account
  5. Select “Cancel Subscription”
  6. Tap or click on “Complete Cancellation” to confirm

Those who signed up and are currently being billed by Apple or Google will need to cancel their subscription through their Android or iOS account.

How to cancel Disney+ on Android

Subscribers who initially download the Disney+ app on their Android device and activated a subscription through the Google Play Store are unable to directly cancel their subscription through the service’s website. In addition, simply uninstalling the app will not cancel the subscription.

Instead, these subscribers will need to cancel Disney+ through the Google Play Store, to ensure they are no longer billed by Google on behalf of Disney.

Similar to the situation with Android, subscribers who have signed up to Disney+ through the iOS app will likely be billed directly by Apple. Cancelling Disney+ doesn’t cancel a Disney account

Before cancelling a Disney+ subscription, it is important to understand that stopping payments to the service is not the same as deleting a Disney account in general. To explain, Disney+ is only one of the services that The Walt Disney Company offers and all of these are linked to the same overall Disney account.

For example, those who buy from ShopDisney.com or subscribe directly to an ESPN streaming service, such as ESPN+, the same email address as Disney+ is typically used – it is a Disney account email. If the subscriber signed up to Disney+ with a different email address than what they use for ESPN+ the Disney store, or any other Disney service, then they effectively have two active Disney accounts. Regardless, neither of them are cancelled when a Disney+ subscription comes to an end.

The reason for this is fairly simple, Disney wants to ensure you can continue to use its other services and products with minimal interference or disruption. Therefore, even though the user has cancelled their Disney+ subscription, their Disney account remains active and usable.

Cancelling Disney+ won’t immediately end a subscription

Another caveat to be aware of before cancelling is that ending a Disney+ subscription does not automatically result in the immediate termination of the subscription. Just like most other streaming services, Disney+ subscribers pay in advance. Therefore, regardless of when they terminate their subscription, they have still already paid for the rest of the current month.

For reference, this is not the calendar month, but the billing month. As a result, once a Disney+ subscriber confirms they want to end their subscription, they will retain access to the service until the current billing cycle has been completed. This date is not static or set to the calendar month, but directly based on when the consumer first activated their subscription.

Depending on when an individual subscriber’s billing date is, some subscribers may find they retain access up to a full month, after cancelling their subscription.

Cancel Disney+ summary

At $6.99 per month, Disney+ is an affordable option, compared to other streaming services. However, if it is time to cancel a Disney+ subscription, the process is easy to do. Those who have subscribed directly through the Disney+ website can cancel their subscription in just a few clicks.

In contrast, those who have signed up either through the Android or iOS apps, and are currently being billed by either Google or Apple, will need to cancel their Disney+ subscription through their Google or Apple account.

Although cancelling a subscription through the Disney+ website, an Android or iOS device is fairly easy, subscribers should be aware that a cancelled Disney+ account does not also mean the consumer’s Disney account has been deleted, or even cancelled. In addition, those subscribers will also retain access to Disney+ until the end of their current billing cycle.
