The Apple TV app is officially getting a new interface. The latest update also results in the discontinuation of iTunes rentals and purchases on Apple TV players.
Many of the changes with the new update were already known. For example, the tvOS 17.2 beta from back in October provided an early look at the new Apple TV app, including the introduction of a new sidebar.
Today, Apple officially announced the launch of the interface with sidebar as part of an update that’s rolling out to all Apple TV devices along with the stable version of tvOS 17.2.
According to Apple, the simplified interface’s new sidebar makes it easier to navigate the app by providing shortcuts to Apple TV+, MLS Season Pass, and Store. This is in addition to shortcuts for the channels and apps that users have already installed on their device.
A new Home section is also accessible through the sidebar, which provides users with a unified guide for shows, movies, and sports. Lastly, users can also now easily switch between profiles for a more personalized experience.
“The redesigned Apple TV app makes it easier than ever for users to watch the shows, movies, and sports they love through an intuitive interface that brings content to the forefront,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services. “With so much available to watch, our aim is to ensure users always have their favorites at their fingertips.”
The new update has now officially discontinued the iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Shows apps on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. As previously reported, users will now be redirected to the Apple TV app to rent or purchase titles, as well as access their existing rentals and purchases.
iPhone and iPad users can expect similar changes to their Apple TV app as well, including the redirection of the iTunes Store app to the Apple TV app.
