Amazon and Xbox have teamed up to offer Fire TV users the option to play a number of popular games, including Starfield, Fallout 4 and Forza Horizon 5, without the need for a game console. The new partnership could prove to be a good solution for any homes looking for a low-cost way to enjoy a huge library of games.

While no console is needed, an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription is required. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate typically costs $16.99 a month and the ability for Fire TV users to access the games on their streaming player will become available in over 25 countries in July.

High-end games typically require a powerful machine to handle the processing, but the new Fire TV support is made possible through the use of cloud gaming. In other words, the internet connection takes care of most of the heavy lifting.

Although this does mean a good and reliable internet connection is a must, it also means device support can extend to a much wider variety of devices, with Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K (2023) and Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2023) the minimum device requirement.

As to be expected, a compatible Bluetooth controller will also be required to play games, with the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers all currently confirmed as compatible options.

This announcement is an extension of Amazon’s commitment to bringing the best entertainment experiences to our customers, including top-tier cloud gaming options. For casual gamers or those new to the hobby, it provides an easy, low-cost entry point to explore the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library. Hardcore gamers can use it as a convenient way to play on another TV or take their games on the go,” Amazon said.

With a compatible Fire TV device, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership and a Bluetooth controller, all that’s left to do is download the the Xbox app when it goes live on Fire TV next month.
