Google has confirmed that there are now more than 150 million monthly active devices running on Android TV and Google TV. The update came as part of a CES announcement rounding out the benefits that are on offer with Google’s various products and services. The announcement also made clear that some additional device options powered by Android/Google TV will become available in 2023.

Android TV first launched back in 2014 and was originally available on the Nexus Player. Since then, the number of devices that run on the platform has expanded greatly. In fact, the platform itself has also undergone some major changes and is now more commonly known as Google TV on newer devices, including Google’s own Chromecast with Google TV lineup. No matter the name, the underlying focus on content over apps is the same, and something which seems to be proving increasingly popular with users.

As part of a CES 2023 announcement late last week, Google confirmed there are now more than 150 million monthly active devices running on either Android TV or Google TV. To put the number into perspective, Android TV was understood to be running on around 110 million devices at the start of 2022, pointing to an increase of roughly 40 million over the past year.

One of the benefits of Android TV is the sheer variety of manufacturers and devices that use the platform in both smart TV and streaming player form. Similar to Android mobile in general, this allows consumers to choose the brand and product type they prefer the most, and even benefit from a familiar user experience when switching between brands and products.

While good news for the Android TV platform in general, Google didn’t provide specifics on how the 150 million active devices breaks down. As a result, it is unclear how many of these are Google’s own Chromecast with Google TV products. Still, the company did state that some new devices running on Android/Google TV will be arriving this year, name-dropping the TCL Q-Series TV and the Hisense ULED TVs, Laser TVs and Laser Cinema lineups in the process. These new for 2023 devices were already announced by Hisense and TCL as part of their own CES 2023 product announcements.

These new devices, as well as any new features and improvements that Google might have in the pipeline, are likely to help increase the number of active Android TV and Google TV devices even further in 2023 and beyond.
